Summary:

The Vice President of Operations leads the operational transformation and standardization of our operating platform for our largest division, Five Star Senior Living. As a vital part of our executive leadership team (ELT), this person will contribute to strategic decision-making and play a crucial role in shaping organizational strategy. This senior leader leads the strategy and implementation of best in class leadership approaches, operational standards and routines across multiple communities/sites to stabilize our business and enable our future growth. The person in this role is resilient, a driver of change and is open to discovering new approaches that will help to re-invent our organization, ultimately delivering an operating platform that allow our team members and residents to thrive. Through clarity of expectations, focus on accountability and constant prioritization, the person in this role will support the successful re-invention of our business.

Responsibilities:

People & Culture Leadership:

  • Foster a culture of growth mindset that supports significant operational change and transformation as we re-invent the way we operate.
  • Build culture across the operational team that encourages trust, transparency and clarity around expectations and standards -
  • Teach, coach, develop, and inspire ownership and accountability on the team’s execution, sustainment and success of operational excellence programs and initiatives.
  • Hire and retain talent that is aligned to the goals, mission and expected behaviors of the organization.
  • Assess and succession plan to ensure an appropriate level of staffing, bench, and talent development in each region.
  • Work in tandem with the Vice President of People & Process Excellence to drive operational excellence and collaboration around standards, goals and strategies.
  • Build strong collaborative teams and leads by our values by example, including leading change and operational excellence
  • Clearly communicates the vision, purpose and organizational priorities and establishes clear goals and expectations for team that support.
  • Provides constructive feedback to reinforce positive behaviors and improve overall performance of team.
  • Encourage open dialogue with team members about growth and development opportunities to help them reach their full potential.
  • Mentor and coach team to create an open and collaborative environment and a greater sense of connection and commitment to AlerisLife and customers.

Strategic Operations

  • With the COO and senior leadership team, lead the strategy, execution and sustainment of our business transformation for our largest division, senior living.
  • Establish routines and standards, rooted in operational best practices that allow our business to effectively scale through an operational platform that supports the success of our team members and experience of our residents. and consistently deliver the best experience for our residents and team members.
  • Lead the design and deployment of strategic plans mindful of markets, consumers, service lines, growth strategies and overall financial and operational enterprise-wide goals accompanied with supporting tactics.
  • Lead, shape and provide visionary leadership to the Five Star team with a strong emphasis on leadership and establishing a influential presence in the field.
  • Dive strategic initiatives to ensure alignment with organizational goals.
  • Establish and maintain a strong presence in the field mentoring and inspiring team members to foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and excellence.
  • Support enterprise-wide revenue and service line goals by setting revenue and margin goals (by Region) and co-design the community/clinic level tactics necessary to achieve goals in the Strategic Plan.
  • In conjunction with the Design and Construction team, oversees designs, schedules, and coordinates general upkeep, major repairs, remodeling, or construction projects of Five Star Senior Living managed properties.
  • Establishes and maintains capital project budgets and schedules.
  • Develops long range plans for the efficient operation and maintenance of facilities, grounds and utility systems.
  • Develops and presents detailed budgets and financial reports on the properties.

Operational Outcomes

  • Drive results by setting expected standards and consistency in operational excellence. Identify areas of opportunity and drive process improvements and execution.
  • Partner with asset manager to provide business updates, understand challenges and future plans.
  • Drive cross functional collaboration through effective prioritization and alignment to solve issues, remove barriers, and ensure continuous improvement.
  • Direct and manage operational metrics and KPIs across all portfolios such as Occupancy, Revenue, EBITDA, People Metrics, etc.
  • Measure and evaluate above quality measures/indicators and provide insights and trends to drive national actions.
  • Partner closely with sales and marketing to identify performance trends and insights to drive action at the regional and community level.
  • Establish process and mechanisms for sales and revenue reporting including monitoring reporting of leads and referrals by community/clinic by source.
  • Support development of analytical tools to better forecast revenues.
  • Monitor salaries and wage expense for the portfolio- with attention to region/community to understand the local dynamics for wages, turnover and applicant market.
  • Leads with clear routines and standards driving the development of monthly process to extract and review operations data.
  • Lead Continuous Improvement initiatives for regions/communities in Division and signs-off on bridge plans.
  • Ensure adherence to all applicable company policies and procedures and state, local, and federal laws and regulations.
  • Continually evolve operational standards and practices and partner with people team to ensure team member development and performance.


Requirements:
  • 10+ years as a senior operations leader role involving a combination of hands-on operations, strategy and people leadership role; preferably in the hospitality or service industry.
  • Experience driving transformation and operational excellence through effective standards and routines, while driving accountability.
  • 5+ years in a corporate/divisional level leadership role for a multi-facility organization; prior experience in a Vice President or Senior Vice President role a plus.
  • Program development experience
  • Experience in project management and program creation, roll-out and implementation across multiple locations. Experience in developing and implementing policies and procedures.
  • Excellent leadership skills with proven ability to motivate, direct, and develop team members to be efficient and effective.
  • Solid business acumen, strategic planning, problem solving and relationship building skills.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with other department heads and team members at all levels of a complex matrixed organization to create a team-oriented environment.
  • Highly effective time management skills and ability to multi-task efficiently.
